At Fostair Ltd, we recently completed a VRV heat recovery system installation at Clays Birmingham, a newly repurposed indoor clay pigeon shooting and entertainment bar in the heart of Birmingham. This £180,000 project required the installation of a high-efficiency climate control system across three floors, ensuring individual temperature regulation in different areas of the building.

The project had to be completed within five weeks, making it a fast-paced installation that required precision planning and expert execution to meet the client's tight deadline ahead of the Christmas party season. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that the new heating and cooling system was fully functional before Clays Birmingham's grand opening.

VRV Heat Recovery System Installation Across Three Floors

As an Accredited Installer for Mitsubishi Electric, we selected Mitsubishi VRV heat recovery systems for this project, providing flexible and energy-efficient climate control across the entire venue. Each floor had specific climate control needs, requiring a carefully designed installation approach.

First Floor: High-Capacity Air Distribution System

The first floor of Clays Birmingham is one of the most frequently used areas of the venue, requiring a system capable of maintaining consistent air distribution and climate control. We installed nine ducted systems, which were integrated into spiral ductwork. This setup achieves an even airflow throughout the space, preventing temperature fluctuations that can affect visitor comfort.

Additionally, we fitted linear air distribution grilles, which are designed to optimise air circulation while maintaining a sleek, modern appearance. This system allows for a quiet and unobtrusive cooling and heating experience, which is essential in an entertainment venue where customer experience is key.

Second Floor: Premium Climate Control For VIP Area

The second floor serves as the VIP area, where guests expect a high level of comfort. To maintain a luxurious atmosphere, we installed five ducted systems, ensuring precise temperature control tailored to different zones within the space.

Once again, these systems were connected to spiral ductwork and linear air distribution grilles to create an aesthetically pleasing and effective climate solution. The airflow is fully customisable, allowing staff to adjust the temperature in different sections of the floor based on occupancy levels and comfort preferences.

Third Floor: Temperature Management For Kitchen / Staff Area

The third floor houses the kitchen and staff area, where consistent temperature regulation is essential due to the heat generated by kitchen equipment. We installed five wall-mounted air conditioning systems, producing effective cooling in high-temperature environments.

Unlike the ducted systems used on the lower floors, these wall-mounted units were chosen for their ease of installation and energy efficiency. Kitchens require precise ventilation and air circulation, so these units provide a steady and controlled temperature, improving both working conditions and overall efficiency in food preparation areas.

Centralised Control For Maximum Efficiency

The entire system is controlled via the Mitsubishi AE200 Central Controller, allowing for remote access and real-time climate adjustments. This means that each floor maintains the perfect temperature without the need for constant manual adjustments. The automated controls also contribute to energy savings, as the system adapts to real-time usage and occupancy levels.

Overcoming Logistical Challenges

As the site was located on New Street in central Birmingham, a crane lift was not possible for placing the outdoor units. Instead, all outdoor units had to be delivered in kit form and reassembled on the roof.

This required a specialist “lift and shift team”, who worked with our Engineers to manually transport and assemble the units in the final location. This method ensured a safe and efficient installation, despite the limitations of working in a busy city centre environment.

With a five-week deadline, this was a fast-paced project that required detailed planning and expert execution. The client needed the venue operational for the Christmas party season, making timely completion essential.
